Health Law Section

The Health Law Section furthers the knowledge of the members of the Section and the Washington State Bar Association in the areas of law involving both federal and local health care. The Section focuses on the business of health care, state and federal reform, fraud and abuse, antitrust, new modes of health care delivery, insurance issues, and many other concerns. The Section works to contribute to valuable relationships among health law practitioners and opportunities to develop health law practices.

The Section provides benefits to members by developing regular educational opportunities, including CLE seminars and notices of important developments in health law; contributing to valuable relationships among health law practitioners and opportunities to develop health law practices; and providing general information relating to healthcare law. The Section also promotes list-serve discussions and social networking opportunities.

Health Law Section Health Care Conference Scholarship

The WSBA Health Law Section awards two (2) scholarships per year of up to $1,250 each to eligible participants to attend nationally recognized health law conferences. Scholarship funds may be used for the conferences sponsored by the following organizations:

1. American Health Law Association (AHLA)
2. American Bar Association (ABA)
3. Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA)
4. Other health law conferences may be proposed by applicant in the application materials

Successful applicants will receive scholarship funds in advance of the conference the recipient plans to attend. Scholarship funds may be used for conference registration, travel, lodging, and other expenses directly related to conference attendance. The amount of funds dispersed will depend on whether the recipient will attend the conference in person or virtually and whether out-of-state travel is required. Scholarship recipients planning to travel to an out-of-state conference will receive the full $1,250.  For conferences (attended virtually, or in person but without travel), funds will be distributed in an amount to cover the conference registration fee, plus other costs directly related to conference attendance. Appropriate verification of costs must be provided upon request.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Either:
Current J.D. or L.L.M. student in a Washington State law school

Or:
Any attorney who is a current member of the WSBA and a member of any state bar for three (3) years or less, and is one or more of the following:
1. Not currently employed;
2. Employed in the public sector;
3. Employed by a non-profit organization;
4. Employed by a Native or Indigenous tribe;
     or
5. Employed by an organization that does not reimburse attorneys for continuing legal education.

Post-conference, scholarship recipients agree to share about their experience with the Health Law Section Executive Committee.

  5. A statement of approximately 500 words or fewer about the applicant's interest in health law, how attending the proposed conference furthers applicant's interest and why a scholarship is necessary from a financial support perspective.

Applications will be collected from April 1 through May 1 with notification of selection by July 1.

2023 Student Health Law Fair & Networking Hour

Join us for the second annual Student Health Law Fair Networking Hour at the University of Washington, Seattle. Light appetizers, beer, and wine will be served. Additional parking information available upon request. Please register by clicking the link below by no later than April 7, 2023. We look forward to seeing you there!

Programming will consist of four presentations (1:15–4:30 p.m.) and a careers panel (4:30–5:15 p.m.). Practitioners are invited to attend the earlier programming as well as the Networking Hour.
